The aim of this dialogue is to embrace an artistic practice of representation on Berlin, that is, DIE VERSCHIEBUNG DER MITTE, as a pre-text to debate on practices of representation and the way we work with them in Social Sciences and in Arts. Questions around the permanence of a certain narration of the city despite the last changes in the form and structure of Berlin and the provincialization of Europe (Chakrabarty, 2000; Pickles, 2004, 2005) will be the framework to contemplate the production of centres and margins, the metaphors of geographical imagination, the hegemonic narratives in the production of spaces and the constant constitution of places. But also a way to speak more in general about structural changes that affect the understanding of public space not only in Berlin, but also in Europe.

PARTICIPANTS:
Manuela Boatca is Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, Institute of Latin American Studies/Lateinamerika-Institut, Freie Universität Berlin. Her work revolves around Social Theory, mainly World-Systems analysis and Postcolonial Sociology, from a transdiciplinary approach.

Fotini Lazaridou-Hatzigoga is an architect and researcher, co-director of PROGRAM – initiative for art and architecture collaborations in Berlin.

Heriberto Cairo Carou is a professor of Political Geography, at the University Complutense of Madrid. Currently dean of the Political Science, Sociology and Anthropology faculty, his research interests may be framed as geopolitic(s), de-colonial thinking, and historical cartography.

María Lois is a professor of Political Geography at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Broadly speaking, her research interests are the construction of collectives spaces and times, focusing on bordering and b/ordering through spatial socialization practices.

Carme Nogueira Artist. In her most recent work she examines the daily resistance to the imposed uses of the city, through specific spatial devices. She took her bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts at the University of Salamanca and her Ph. D. at the University of Vigo. She has been associate professor and researcher at the latter university, and was granted a scholarship by the Hochschule der Künste, in Berlin.
